Many women today have taken household do it yourself repairs as an easy, can-do problem to solve. If you are one of those women, these tips will help you accomplish these repairs. If you have someone to do the work for you, these tips will help you to see if the work is being done correctly. This is one of several easy home repair jobs – fixing a window.

Weathered Windows

Windows showing wear due to the weather deserve maintenance to perk them up. If the windows are air tight, you’ll save money on your utility bills. In days gone by, caulking windows was all the rage, but now, manufacturing techniques don’t use caulking. If you still have this type of window, this part’s for you.

  1. Remove all old, cracked, or separated caulking and clean the area with a small paint brush.
  2. Soften the putty to make it pliable and then replace it with a putty knife.
  3. Press the putty firmly to both the sash and the glass.
  4. Let dry. You can make it last longer with a coat of paint.

Opening Windows Easily

Your windows are your exit in case of emergency, and they need to be opened easily at all times just for the pleasure of easy usage.

  1. Remove excess paint that would keep the window from opening.
  2. Clean thoroughly with a vacuum, brush, or sand paper.
  3. Slide a cake of paraffin canning wax over the sash.
  4. If your windows operate on the weighted pulley system, replace the ropes that hold the weights in place.

Lubricating Window Locks

The locks on your windows might stick with age, so be sure to keep them operational using the following:

  1. Remove all excess paint. Scrape it off with a single edge razor and vacuum up the paint.
  2. Lubricate the locks with sewing machine oil, graphite or petroleum jelly.

Your contribution to the maintenance of your home might put a twinkle in your mate’s eye. It certainly will create a warm, accomplished feeling inside your own heart.

As you can see, fixing a window is one the simple home repair jobs that you can add to your arsenal of do it yourself repairs.

Woman must not accept; she must challenge. She must not be awed by that which has been built up around her;she must reverence that woman in her which struggles for expression. ~ Margaret Sanger
