When the season becomes colder, critters who normally live outside quite happily, intelligently work to find a warmer spot for the winter, and sometimes that means inside your home. Here are some natural pest control tips to discourage them.

Ant Control

Cinnamon, catnip and our super solution all deter ants. Just sprinkle the dried cinnamon or catnip in their path. Make a mixture of 2/3 cup water, 1/3 cup white vinegar, and 2-3 Tablespoons dish soap and spray the solution directly on them.

Another great natural pest control for ants are cucumber peels. Spread them around outside where the ants are entering. It also works for moths, flies and other insects.

Mice Control

  • Place several old pans containing USED kitty litter in your basement or garage. If it smells like a cat, the mice want nothing to do with it.
  • Put five boxes of moth balls in a mesh bag like a laundry bag. Hang the bag near the doorway to your basement or garage. The smell repels mice, but also bugs.
  • Close up any openings with steel wood pads. Mice won’t chew through them.
  • Sprinkle ground cayenne pepper or pure peppermint extract around the garage or basement, both on the inside and outside, but especially near entry holes. Peppermint can be sprinkled directly on items you want the mice to stay away from.

Spider Control

Spiders are more prevalent in the summer months although that depends on where you live.

Get rid of cardboard boxes – spiders love wood and cardboard is make of wood. Use plastic totes instead for storage.

Eucalyptus leaves are a natural pest control for spiders. Hang some in your closets and places where you see them.

Window Treatment for Pests

Wash windows inside and out with amonia and water. When completely dry, go over the entire window, including frames with a newspaper and kerosene. The kerosene will evaporate immediately but leaves a residue that repels spiders, flies and mosquitoes.

Using natural pest control for the critters and insects in your home and garden will help you to breathe easier with small children and pets around.
